Dad Things - Ted Lasso, S2 E8

If you haven’t heard by now, Ted Lasso on Apple TV+ is a great TV show. If you don’t already have access, Apple TV+ is $5/mo and that price is worth it just for that show alone. I bring it up because the last episode, which aired this past Friday, dealt with more than a few of the characters’ father/son relationships.
I won’t spoil it for those who haven’t watched, but when watching that episode, I couldn’t help think about my own relationship with my dad and the one with my son. I think I speak for most guys when I say my relationship with my dad wasn’t the greatest growing up (I’m lucky that I had one because some can’t say the same). And that it heavily influenced the relationship I aimed to have with my son.
I think all parents strive to provide a better childhood for their children than they had. I know my parents did and they definitely achieved that. Growing up, I resented my dad for a number of things that I won’t get into. I remember thinking I didn’t want to be like him as an adult. Now that I’m a parent, I realize he was probably doing the best that he could. He was trying to give me a better childhood experience than he had, which I’m discovering, wasn’t all that great. I’ll probably never tell him, but I’ve forgiven him. He was just going through the same things that we all are struggling through now: just navigating through life while being the best parent he could be.
I know we’ve all had our ups and mostly downs these past almost 2 years now. And I know this is something we all need to hear every once in awhile: you’re doing great and we’re all doing the best we can.
And now, here are some links. Cheers.
